Songs Which Inspire Me

One day, when I was in my early thirties, my Mom told me in a teary voice, "I heard on the radio today why you aren't married."

After a brief flash of thoughts of Dr. Laura 'addressing Lyndie's singleness' across America, I took a deep breath and said, "Okay, why haven't I married?"

Again, choking with tears, she said, "He died in Vietnam!"

"oh, that"

"What? You knew? How did you know?"

My mind was spinning in a million directions, where to start to answer her question? In all the confusion, I could hear Gordon Lightfoot singing: "And she cried into the silken folds of her new wedding gown."

"Well, Mom, there is this Gordon Lightfoot song..."

This song speaks to every aspect of the impact of the Vietnam Conflict on my generation.
